vs POOLE TOWN
Swindon Supermarine manager Lee Spalding is satisfied by his side’s start to their 2019-20 Southern League campaign!
Manager Lee Spalding is content with his side’s start to the Southern League Premier Division South season despite picking up just one point in the last three games. After starting the campaign with back-to-back wins, last weekend’s 2-2 draw at home to Salisbury was sandwiched between defeats at Truro City and Merthyr Town. Those three sides are expected to be in contention for promotion come May, as are Marine’s opponents on Saturday – early league leaders Poole Town. Victory at the Webbswood Stadium this weekend would move Marine level on points with the Dorset outfit, so Spalding is satisfied with his side’s efforts so far despite the recent wobble.
“We have won two, lost two and drawn one, so it is not a disastrous start at all – it is quite a positive start,” said Spalding. “The leaders are on 10 points and that is Poole, and if we beat them on Saturday, we will be level on points with them. “At this stage of the season, I don’t think you should be looking at the table. The most positive thing is that we have got seven points on the board from what has been a tough run of fixtures.”
Spalding felt his side turned in their worst performance of the season last time out as they fell to a 3-1 defeat at Merthyr on Bank Holiday Monday. Therefore, the Marine manager wants to see a stronger defensive effort against Poole. “There are no excuses for Monday’s result, I just don’t think we were good enough on the day,” said Spalding.
“We didn’t perform to the levels we expect and I definitely want a reaction this weekend. “We need to make sure we bounce straight back against what will probably be one of the best sides in the league. “Defensively, we need to make sure we tighten up. We have to make sure we are back to being compact, defensively sound and looking to get a clean sheet.”
Still unavailable are Matt Coupe is on holiday but is also suspended for tomorrows game. while Harry Williams is still troubled by a thigh injury but Bradley Grey returns from a shoulder injury. There could also be a surprise addition to the squad as manager hopes to finalises a deal with a new player with Conference experience before Saturday midday deadline. More new to follow when the player is registered.
