Truro City Preview

TRURO CITY

Tomorrow morning the staff and players make their longest this season for a league match when they travel down to Cornwall to take on the current league leaders Truro City. Like Marine, they have started the season with two wins.

The first came last Saturday when the won 2-0 at last seasons surprise package Metropolitan Police. Then they followed that up with an emphatic 3-0 win at home to Dorchester Town. With no goals conceded they sit top on goal difference from promoted Blackfield & Langley, Chesham United, Marine and Harrow Borough, all with six points. All of there five goals came from different players.

The game at Truro is going to be a real test for the Marine lads and something manager Lee Spalding and assistant Kevin Milsom are looking forward to. Both commentated in training last night (Thursday) that the lads have played anywhere near their true potential in our two opening games and they are confident we can return from the long journey to Cornwall with at least a point.

Spalding said: “In our first two games, I wouldn’t say we’ve been at our best. “But we have shown great spirit, great togetherness and the players have worked their socks off and managed to dig in and get a result when we haven’t been at our best. “That’s a good sign because I know when we do reach our best and we do start clicking, we’ll really start causing problems for other teams. “We will need to be at our best on Saturday down at Truro to get anything from the game. “We will need to be better than we were last Saturday and better than we were with the ball on Tuesday.”

Marine face a four-hour trip down to one of the most south-westerly teams in English football as they go hunting a victory over a side who are among the favourites to make an immediate return to the National League set-up. Spalding does not believe any side will have truly hit their best just yet and has eyed the early season fixture as a chance to steal points off the potential league champions.

The Marine manager is calling the weekend’s game ‘business as usual’ for his team and is confident that if performance levels are as they should be, his team can make the lengthy trip well worth it. Spalding said: “It’s still early doors. We’re only two games in and at the end of the day, no one has done anything yet. “Both teams have won both games, but it’s business as usual for us.

“We’re going to Truro looking to try and get a positive result and get something out of the game. “It will be tough because they were relegated last season from the National League South. “They’re a big football club and if you look at their history and where they’ve been, they will be looking to go straight back up again, so I’m expecting a really tough test.”

Spalding will have a full squad to pick from, with no injuries, although Matt Williams missed training last night as a precaution due to a niggle which won’t stop him starting at Truro, and he’s a player at the top of his game at the moment with two excellent performances over this past week along with his fellow central defender Mat Liddiard. Spalding’s toughest test will be who to start up front with changes from Saturday’s team to Tuesday’s, but both combinations bringing its rewards with late goals and three points from each game?
