Marine v Basingstoke Town Preview
Thursday 26th October 2023
Marine vs Basingstoke Town Preview:
Unbeaten in four, Supermarine will as always, head in to this weekend’s tie in positive mood as they look to progress their Isuzu FA Trophy campaign and get a feel of the Dragons ahead of the two sides meeting in a league fixture next Saturday afternoon in Hampshire.
Despite this week’s departures of Ed Williams (to Chippenham Town) and Ben Whitehead (to Cirencester Town) further diminishing Head Coach Stuart Fleetwood’s selection options, Supermarine will be buoyed at the news that our visitors will not be at full strength either.
Following a bizarre midweek home defeat at the hands of Hayes & Yeading which saw no fewer than four of their players picking up injuries and despite three having to attend A&E, thankfully none of the injuries were as serious as first thought.
“It was just a disaster from every facet,” Basingstoke boss Dan Brownlie was left to reflect on following his sides defeat. We started well but then it was just injury after injury after injury and we never recovered from that. Its an unfortunate one because you can’t necessarily legislate for those kinds of injuries and particularly the amount of them but the real undoing of us was the two goals we gifted them in the second half.”
The Hampshire side were hopeful of making some loan signings ahead of the weekend while Stuart Fleetwood also has a signing to announce but defender Toby Raison will not be available for selection due to being cup-tied.
While we find ourselves in the First Round having defeated Tiverton Town 3-1 at the Webbswood Stadium at the Third Qualifying Round stage, our visitors are here courtesy of a 3-0 home win over Southern League Division One Central side Kidlington. The winners of the tie will pocket a cool £3,000, while the defeated side will earn £775.
