Match Report from Pete Crockett

FOR DOUG AND TONY

There are days in football when the game carries a deeper resonance. This was one such evening at the Imagine Cruising Stadium where Swindon Supermarine delivered not only their finest performance of the season, but one shaped by a sense of purpose, memory, and quiet tribute.

High-flying Bishops Cleeve arrived intent on strengthening their playoff ambitions. They left having been comprehensively outplayed by a Swindon Supermarine side that combined craft, energy, and resolve in equal measure. It was a Marine display of cohesion where every player contributed, every movement had intent, and every challenge was made with conviction.

Marine began with urgency, seizing the initiative from the first whistle. Inside five minutes Frankie Monk curled an effort toward the goal’s bottom corner only for Lewis Clayton to intervene smartly.

Two minutes later, Monk’s influence told: his flat teasing corner dropped dangerously into the six-yard box where BRAD HOOPER reacted quickest to tuck home with poise.

The visitors were unsettled, their back line stretched and disorientated by Marine’s movement. Monk remained at the heart of it all, testing the goalkeeper again showing deft control from Jonny Asamoah’s delivery.

Bishops Cleeve’s first threat came on ten minutes, Noah Rubio’s free kick seeking Harry Williams at the far post, but Olly Case intervened decisively.

Marine surged forward again. Asamoah’s pace tore gaps in the defence, his driven cross narrowly evading Conor McDonagh thanks to an excellent interception. Monk, relentless, followed with another stinging effort.

There were moments of defiance - Bishops Cleeve’s Ryan Messenger’s low strike required Jamie Edge’s alert clearance but the first half pattern was unmistakable. The visitors looked increasingly discomfited, their structure unravelling under sustained pressure.

Midway through the half McDonagh’s anticipation forced an error, Asamoah pouncing on the loose ball. A defensive hand blocked the ball as he tried to flick it past a defender. This provoked Marine appeals for a penalty that, in truth, would have been harsh.

The second goal arrived on 23 minutes born of fluid interplay between Case, Zach Rugman, and McDonagh. From the resulting corner Piotr Petrynski delivered with precision and BRAD HOOPER, alive to the moment, struck again at the far post.

Marine were in full flow now. A third goal felt inevitable and on the half-hour it came. Rugman recycled possession and found JONNY ASAMOAH on the edge of the area. With elegance and certainty he curled his shot around an approaching defender and inside the far post - a finish of the highest quality.

At the interval Marine left to warm applause; Bishops Cleeve retreated to regroup - making three half time changes in search of a response.

The visitors emerged after the break with renewed intent and briefly threatened to shift the momentum. Within three minutes a sweeping move saw Ben McLean’s low ball flash across goal. Harry Williams kept it alive, finding Rubio, whose shot beat Lucas Myers but not the vigilant Olly Case who cleared heroically from the line.

Moments later Marine countered with menace - Asamoah and McDonagh combining sharply before a teasing cross just evaded Monk. The pressure on Marine mounted. Rubio tested Myers again, and Harry Williams drove at the defence, only to be denied by another assured save.

On the hour Myers stood tall once more, blocking bravely at close range to preserve the clean sheet. This was Marine’s sternest examination, yet they met it with composure and discipline. Gradually the storm passed.

By the final quarter-hour Marine had reasserted control. Their passing regained its fluency, their defensive shape its authority. Bishops Cleeve could find no way through. Whilst Marine saw out the closing stages with calm assurance, their intensity undimmed, their organisation unyielding.

This was, in every sense a complete performance. Lucas Myers secured a third consecutive clean sheet, his interventions in the second half crucial. The defence, marshalled with intelligence and courage, withstood sustained pressure.

In midfield, Tawana Changa, Zach Rugman, and the outstanding Brad Hooper combined industry with incision with him adding clinical finishing to his display. Further forward, Jonny Asamoah, Conor McDonagh, and Frankie Monk tormented the opposition in the first half - their movement and interplay setting the tone for the victory.

Yet beyond the football there was something more. The Swindon Supermarine community gathered in remembrance, mourning the loss of two cherished figures, Doug Chancellor and Tony Grocott. Their memory was honoured in the minutes silence before the game and in the spirit with which the match was played.

Marine manager Bobby Wilkinson expressed it best:

“I want to dedicate tonight’s victory to Dougie and Tony, and their incredible families. Two people who supported me and my staff and players since I came to the club. I was devastated to hear they had passed away. Tonight’s performance was for them. We told the players to go out, enjoy themselves, and put in a performance that would make those two gentlemen proud. The condolences of myself, my management team, and my players are with their families and friends. They will both be missed around the club.“

A sentiment very much shared by all those connected with Swindon Supermarine.

Come on Marine!
