MARINE’S UNBEATEN AWAY RUN IN 2026 ENDS AT WESTBURY

Unbeaten runs are sustained by consistency as much as by confidence. At Westbury Swindon Super marine saw their unbeaten away run in 2026 brought to a halt by a home side who understood the requirements of the occasion and met them with clarity and resolve.

Marine began brightly enough. They enjoyed early territory and an initial long throw briefly unsettled the Westbury defence. Yet while the visitors saw plenty of the ball they found it harder to translate that possession into clear opportunities.

Westbury, patient and well organised, were alert to openings. When Marine’s defence was caught in possession Luke Purnell was required to make a sharp save from Cole Fleming. It was an early reminder that the home side were ready to act decisively when chances arose.

Marine had moments of their own. Sid Gbla released Sal Abubakar, whose cross found Tawana Changa stretching at the far post, though unable to direct his effort goalwards. Later, Abubakar’s shot was blocked and Conor McDonagh’s follow‑up struck a defender’s arm. Appeals followed, but the referee fairly judged there to be no offence.

By half‑time, Purnell had been the busier of the two goalkeepers, though the goalless scoreline fairly reflected a competitive, if at times scrappy, first half.

The pattern of the game changed after the interval. Marine struggled to find any rhythm or fluency while Westbury defended with discipline and looked to attack with the greater purpose. A swift break from a Marine corner on the hour forced another fine save from Purnell, again denying Selwood.

Shortly after came the game’s main flashpoint, when Marine’s Tawana Changa brought down a forward racing clear. The yellow card drew strong reaction from the home support baying for red but Westbury quickly refocused.

The decisive moment arrived ten minutes from time. Marine were unable to fully clear their lines and Westbury, staying alert, capitalised. The ball broke invitingly and Bevan Cross struck firmly and accurately, a confident finish.

Marine responded late, Myles Ferguson forcing an athletic save with the Swindonians first effort on target, but Westbury held firm to see out the contest.

In the final analysis, Westbury deserved their victory. They defended with organisation, showed patience without the ball, and took their opportunity when it came. It was a performance built on understanding, resolve, and discipline.

It is usually wise to resist individual censure. Yet football is an honest witness. Most Marine players laboured dutifully even if not at their best; however some appeared less persuaded by the game’s less decorative requirements - like working space for themselves, tracking back, or pressing with zeal and zest. Commitment announces itself.

So too does its absence. Most supporters are stoical about defeats - they happen. Where they become less phlegmatic is when they see some players appearing not to give their fullest efforts. Monday offers a chance to put a disappointing performance to rights - that will, of course, be made far more likely if all in the team give 100% to the cause.

Come on Marine!
