STORM-TESTED MARINE EXTEND UNBEATEN RUN IN NEW FOREST GALE

There are evenings when football is played; and there are evenings when it is endured. This, in the rain-lashed reaches of the New Forest, belonged emphatically to the latter.

Where Saturday had offered the balm of a Devonian sun this was something altogether more hostile. Beneath a sullen sky rain swept across Bashley’s ground in squalls, the wind a constant and capricious accomplice. It was a day when the game itself became secondary to the contest with the elements, when control and craft were frequently at the mercy of nature’s whim.

Yet within that turmoil both Bashley and Marine produced a contest of commendable spirit and no little quality. Those inclined to lament the errant pass, or misjudged touch might reflect that, in such conditions, football’s usual certainties are stripped away. The wind, as ever, proved the great leveller.

Marine, reshuffled from their victory at Willand Rovers - with Luke Purnell absent and Sam Turl suspended - Marine introduced Lucas Myers and Dayo Sonoiki to the starting line-up and began with purpose. Early crosses from Conor McDonagh and Sal Abubakar carried menace, although the Bashley defence stood firm.

With the ball behaving like a beach ball in a seaside gale neither side could establish lasting control. It was fitting that the opening goal, on 19 minutes, came in a manner shaped by the conditions.

Finley Toghill, collecting possession some 45-yards out on the left, struck goalwards. The trajectory - part ambition, part assistance from the wind - carried it over the retreating goalkeeper and into the net. Spectacular, certainly; whether calculated or a tad fortuitous was open to interpretation. Either way, the player got rewarded for being brave enough to give it a go.

Marine responded at once and within a minute were aggrieved not to be awarded a penalty, referee Anthony Cross unmoved. Their persistence, however, was rewarded on 25 minutes. A well-worked move down the left saw Brad Hooper at the back post slide the ball across goal for Sid Gbla who applied the composed finish.

Thereafter, the contest ebbed and flowed without either side gaining mastery, the wind continuing to dictate terms. Even the simplest exchanges became fraught, and efforts at goal - such as the Stags Luke Holmes’ thirty-yard strike before the interval - were liable to exaggeration by the elements.

The second half brought a reversal of fortunes, Bashley now facing the gale. Yet it was the hosts who began the brighter, a corner causing unease before an assistant’s flag intervened. Set pieces, inevitably, offered opportunity: Zach Rugman’s long throws sowed danger, though Marine too found themselves thwarted by offside decisions.

For a period the game descended into something approaching a battle of attrition, both sides cancelling each other out as wind and rain imposed their will. Chances came sporadically - Toghill again influential for Bashley, Joe Freak wasteful when well placed, while Marine threatened through Gbla and Hooper without reward.

Controversy flickered midway through the half when Sal Abubakar was sent crashing to the deck unsanctioned. Bashley, breaking swiftly, nearly capitalised, only to fire over. Had the effort gone in Marine would, with some apparent justification, have felt unjustly treated.

With 13 minutes remaining, the hosts regained the lead. Joe Freak’s fierce effort dipped and swerved treacherously; Myers on the stretch parried, and Jack Lovell was on hand to convert the rebound.

Marine’s response was immediate and admirable. Within three minutes Frankie Monk, released through on goal, displayed admirable composure to draw the sides level once more.

The closing stages carried a sense that either side might yet claim victory. Bashley were denied a golden opportunity by a tight offside call; Marine, through Olly Case, saw a volley bravely blocked. In stoppage time, the hosts appealed for a penalty, though the forward’s fall - a tad too thespian - did not convince.

So the points were shared, a result that felt both fair and inevitable. Neither side had quite done enough to command victory, though both deserved credit for their endeavour in conditions that would have tested resolve as much as ability.

For Bashley, Toghill, Lovell and Holmes stood out, their contributions belying the home side’s league position. For Marine, Piotr Petrynski impressed once more at left-back, Jamie Edge brought calm authority to the defence, and Brad Hooper’s composure in midfield was notable.

This was not Marine at their fluent best. It was, however, a performance of resilience and character. Six matches unbeaten now, and still without defeat on the road in 2026, Marine continue to demonstrate the virtues of a side increasingly difficult to beat - even when the elements conspire against them.

Off the field it was a pleasure to see opposing supporters convivially chatting both during and post match. The genuinely cheery wishes from the Bashley supporters to Marine followers for a safe journey home is exactly what makes non-league football so special.

Come on Marine!
