Marine 2 Corsham Town 0
Wiltshire Premier Shield 1st Round | Tuesday 29th October 2024
Match Report from Pete Crockett
THE CLOCKS GO BACK IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE
The Marine line up was a mixture of experienced first team regulars, squad players, and emerging young players. These players, alongside their opponents Corsham Town, produced an entertaining match.
The early stages saw an ebb and flow with both sides having half chances. This included Marine’s Lucias Vine thumping a shot against the post in the early exchanges.
Midway through the first half Stuart Fleetwood was played in on a one on one with the visiting keeper. A touch to get the ball out from under his feet, a drawing back of the boot, and the ball deftly guided just inside the far post and past the diving keeper for a 1-0 scoreline.
The first half seemed to be coming to an end with Marine leading one-nil. However, Stuart Fleetwood played in Lucias Vine. The striker worked the ball deftly back and forth to create an opening for a shot. Then from 18yards he hit a precisely placed effort into the far top corner to double Marine’s lead.
The second half saw the game continue to consist of attack and counter attack. Both sides forced sharp saves from the opposing keeper. It was an entertaining encounter played in a good spirit by two teams determined to play the ball to feet.
Corsham Town played football that was pleasing on the eye. Some of their build up play was impressive. Marine’s Dan Gillespie, manager for the evening stated, “Corsham did cause us a couple of issues I thought they pressed really well.” If they had a flaw it was that they perhaps overplayed around the Marine box giving defenders time to close them down or block their efforts.
The referee Keith Simpson and his assistants also deserve credit for allowing the game to breathe – they officiated in an effective but unobtrusive manner.
For Marine the game offered regulars and squad players a useful run out. However, there was something far more positive. Marine gave four young players a chance to show their worth. Dylan Griffin in midfield combined tenacity with a shrewd eye for a pass; Cheldon Valere came on as a second half substitute and looked a real threat on Marine’s left flank; Oludayo Sonoiki also came on in the second half – he showed a capacity to find space and looked comfortable on the ball; and finally Josh McKinley came on late in the game and looked a composed and tidy player.
This was a match of contrasting ages. Stuart Fleetwood showed that even if the legs may not be as sprightly his good footballing brain alongside the capacity to find space and finish adroitly remained.
However, the appearance of four young players in the Marine line up was the most important legacy from this match. Marine supporters left optimistic that they had seemed some promising young players wearing Marine’s blue and white hoops.
Come on Marine!
