Match Report from Pete Crockett
ROBINS SNATCH IT AT THE END
Marine took the lead when in the 40th minute Harry Williams pirouetted with his back to goal and rifled a fierce shot into the top corner.
Bracknell’s best chance in the first half was an early back post header from Jordan Esprit that was saved by Fiachra Pagel’s outstretched foot.
In the first quarter of an hour of the second half Marine had chances to extend their lead but Michael Fernandes cutting in from the left fired wide. Meanwhile Harry Williams missed two chances that were conceivably easier than the one he scored.
Bracknell equalised in the 74th minute when a scuffed Marine clearance fell to the feet of Dan Roberts whose effort, although not cleanly struck, was on target and nestled inside the far post.
From the equaliser Bracknell looked the more likely to snatch victory and Seb Bowerman in the 87th minute cut across the box and flashed a shot just wide of the post. The visitors also clipped the post from a Joel Rollinson effort.
At the final whistle Marine were left to curse their profligacy with those missed chances in the early stages of the second half. Bracknell will feel they deserved the points for their pressure in the final stages.
In his post-match comments Marine head coach Stuart Fleetwood stated the following: “I am gutted. If that was a lesson in how to not finish a game. Five, six clear cut opportunities to go and kill the game. If you don’t take your chances – and these were not half chances they were clear cut chances to kill it and it is done….It is the most angry and disappointed I have been with them….to go and throw it away like that is inexcusable.“
He then talked about some of the positive attributes of Marine’s performance. In terms of the late goals Marine have recently conceded he felt it is down to poor decision making at times. He also cited how Bracknell created five chances and scored two whereas Marine seemed to have to create ten to score one. “I can’t keep saying how well we played – to lose the game in that manner is unacceptable.“
Marine supporters making their way home will feel similarly disappointed. The club is seven points clear of the relegation places but there is a need to recognise there is still significant work required to secure safety.
On a more positive note credit to referee Stuart Kyle and his assistants Albie Jefferey and Coby Woodley - they officiated with a pleasing mixture of common sense and skilled player management. A good officiating performance – well done to all three of them.
Come on Marine!
