Match Report from Pete Crockett
MARINE AND GOSPORT STALEMATE
Both teams came into this game with some decent league form. Gosport Borough were undefeated in three with two of those games being victories. Marine meanwhile had won three of their last four matches.
The teams were evenly matched but the tacky surface after the recent storms made it difficult for either side to get the ball down and pass with their normal fluidity.
The match had very few chances. Marine’s best chance fell in the first half to Harry Williams whose shot was smothered by Gosport keeper Adam Parkes. This opening was created by some dribbling wizardry from Michael Fernandes. The home team also had an effort on target from Olly Mehew whose low shot, after cutting in from the right, was spilt by the visiting keeper but fell kindly for the away team.
In terms of Gosport Borough their best chances were also in the first half with Charlie Wassmer’s header cleared off the line by Marine’s Ryan Campbell. Gosport’s Alfie Stanley also fired a shot just wide of Fiachra Pagel’s far post.
The second half was a more attritional affair with the two sides effectively cancelling each other out. Whilst Gosport had the better in terms of possession they struggled to break through Marine’s resolute defence where Sam Turl, Jake Lee, and Ioan Richards put in commanding performances. In terms of Gosport Borough Cameron Murray played well in midfield and Charlie Wassmer was unyielding in the centre of defence.
Post match Gosport’s boss Danny Holland felt his side could have been “a little more clinical in front of goal.” He also, accurately, cited that his team had the greater second half possession.
Marine’s head coach Stuart Fleetwood commenting on the result said that he felt “it was a deserved point – we had to dig in and it was a gritty performance… both teams had an even amount of chances - we both had two chances each…both teams put in a lot of effort… I thought Sam Turl was excellent today… our overall shape looked very solid. Another clean sheet which is paramount to getting points at this level.”
He additionally praised the defensive tracking back of Michael Fernandes and it was certainly the case that he made numerous timely challenges in defensive zones. He has worked hard to enhance this aspect of his game and deserved Stuart Fleetwood’s plaudit for doing so.
Trying to select a player of the match was not easy. Several players warranted consideration:
- Jake Lee was impressive throughout with some prompt tackles, good interceptions, and an assuredness on the ball.
- Alongside him in the centre of defence Ioan Richards also put in an excellent performance. He was determined in the tackle and won many aerial duels.
- Jamie Edge did an excellent screening job in front of the centre backs, constantly made himself available to receive a pass in tight spaces and made some important interceptions.
- Sam Turl put in an excellent shift shackling any Gosport threat down their left wing. He was solid in the tackle, did an excellent job preventing crosses into the Marine area, made some excellent blocks, and overlapped with energy when the opportunity arose.
After much consideration and prevarication, I sought the views of several Marine supporters who were of the view that Sam Turl just shaded it.
On now to the next match away at Dorchester Town who last lost a league match fifteen games ago when Swindon Supermarine beat them one-nil.
