MARINE SUFFER NARROW DEFEAT AT HANWELL

Marine’s league woes continued on the road as they fell narrowly short away to The Geordies in what was described as a frustrating display by the blues boss. That said, there were still many positives to take from the performance.

Swindon Supermarine started the game strongly, and were able to create space down the left for skipper Ryan Campbell and Ollie Mehew to exploit. Yet, as the game grew, so did the hosts and this by this time on the possession of the ball started to become extremely thin.

Chris Moore’s side started get a grip on the ball, causing problems for the Marine defence and for Luke Purnell in goal who became extremely busy, turning away three threatening efforts to keep the score line at 0-0 within the first 25 minutes.

Marine though, stayed tough, rugged and looked to create efforts of their own and went close shortly after Purnell’s heroics through Dave Sims-Burgess but he dragged his shot wide.

In their pursuit to find an opener, Marine carried on applying pressure to The Geordies, but they dealt with this pressure well, barely allowing any attack to penetrate their defence.

However, it was nearly pierced by Liban Ibrahim just five minutes before the half-time whistle, who used tricky feet to surpass his man and open space up to let fly but again the ball peered wide of home keeper Dion-Curtis Henry’s net.

It looked as though both sides were going to be going down the tunnel for half-time goalless, but Hanwell’s Edwards had other ideas. After a passage of play down the right-hand side of the pitch, the ball then came into the centre of play and into his feet of Edwards who was completely free and 30-yards from goal.

With no pressure on the frontman at all, Jordan Edwards curled a splendid effort that looped over the heads of the Marine defence and into the top-right corner of Purnell’s net who had no chance of stopping it.

Meaning Hanwell had the upper hand going down the tunnel, giving Fleetwood and his side a lot of work to do in the second half.

Marine desperately needed a goal if they wanted any chance at changing the picture of their start to the campaign and they came out of the tunnel brightly.

Looking fired up to change the perplexation of the game, Marine started the second-half well. Yet, again they were unable to muster a real advantage over their opponents who were beating down Fleetwood’s side with crucial game management.

This being through their physio who was involved heavily, treating players on a number of occasions but also their physicality.

Despite efforts from Harry Williams early on and Gabe Reivers, who came on for Ollie Mehew in the 60th minute, the hosts controlled the majority of the game.

Saying that, The Geordies didn’t have much to shout about either in the second half with only one promising effort that was turned away brilliantly by Purnell again, who starred throughout.

Now in their ascendency of victory, Hanwell looked just whittle down the clock in the final five minutes but their work wasn’t done yet.

Marine looked promising down the left in the second half through Ibrahim, who fulfilled Mehew’s position after going off, and in the final moments of the game the 23-year-old whipped a teasing cross into the Hanwell area, meeting the head of Harry Williams but his soft header was collected easily by Henry in goal.

So, it ended in defeat again for Fleetwood and his side as they continue their hunt for their first point in this season’s campaign.

Nevertheless, there is still plenty of football to play and plenty of points to pick up and they have the chance to pick up their first next weekend on home against relegated Havant and Waterlooville.

Come on Marine!
