Match Report from Pete Crockett
MARINE UNLUCKY WITH INJURIES
Most of the first half was uneventful with Taunton having more possession but Supermarine protecting their stand in goalkeeper well. In the first minute of stoppage time Sam Turl’s long throw saw a scramble in the Taunton box. Dave Sims-Burgess laid the ball into the path of ZACK KOTWICA who fired home through a crowded penalty area to give Marine the lead.
With the game moving well beyond the six minutes of indicated added time Marine’s stand in keeper Nick Peare made a good save from a twenty-yard pile driver. From the resultant corner a goalmouth melee saw Ryan Cainey poke the ball home from close range.
In the second half Taunton took the lead on 56 minutes when Owen Brain, having shaken off a couple of Marine defenders, surged into the penalty area and hit a low bobbling shot that took a deflection and settled inside the far post and wrong footing the stand in keeper Nick Peare.
On 64 minutes a Dave Sims-Burgess effort forced a good save out of the visitor’s and former Marine keeper Josh Gould. It was the Taunton keeper who then secured the three points for the Peacocks with an excellent injury time save from a well struck 20-yard effort from Ioan Richards.
Having been critical of the last two performances I am inclined to give most Marine players credit for keeping going despite things going cruelly against them in terms of injuries. Nick Peare donned the keeper gloves and did well. Additionally, the back four of Sam Turl, Jake Lee, Ioan Richards, and Ryan Campbell defended impressively.
Anton Dworzak put in a good performance until having to come off at half time due to the reoccurrence of a knee injury that kept him out last week. His midfield teammates Jamie Edge and Zack Kotwica were also tenacious in screening the stand in keeper. Dave Sims-Burgess and Harry Williams also worked industriously up front.
This was more of a battling performance than was the case in the previous games against Wimborne and Tiverton. However, the injuries meant constant tactical readjustments were required which made Marine’s task so much harder.
Much discussion post match focused on Marine not having a second keeper on the bench. I tend to be sanguine on this. Lots of clubs opt to have a greater breadth of on-field options on the bench. Other teams have a substitute keeper who they might only use very occasionally, I am not sure there is a perfect answer to this quandary.
The referee had a “curate’s egg” performance. His handling of open play was fine. The lackadaisical approach he adopted to time wasting exasperatingly poor. When he allowed a substituted player to slowly amble the width of the field towards the end of the match it was clear that he was being hoodwinked.
The defeat leaves Marine very much in a relegation scrap. All is not lost but Marine desperately need a win soon.
Come on Marine!
