FANTASTIC FERNANDES TORMENTS TIVVY

A Michael Fernandes first half hat trick sealed the three points for Swindon Supermarine. In the early exchanges both sides had goals disallowed – Marine’s Harry Williams seeing his sixth minute effort chalked off and Tiverton seeing an effort cancelled out as a result of a foul in the build up.

With eight minutes elapsed some excellent forward play from Harry Williams set Liban Ibrahim clear. The angle was an acute one and the midfielder’s effort cleared the crossbar. In the 13th minute Marine appealed in vain for a penalty kick after a heavy challenge in the box. The view of those of a Marine disposition in the YUASA stand was the officials called it correctly.

Three minutes later the visitor’s Jeff Forkuo tried his luck from distance and Luke Purnell made an excellent save. With 22 minutes gone a handling error from Zak Baker in the visiting goal nearly offered a chance for Harry Williams. The keeper owed a debt of gratitude to his defenders for closing down the Marine man swiftly.

Marine took the lead in the 29th minute when Michael Fernandes was played in after a quick throw. He advanced on goal and deftly slid the ball past the advancing keeper. Six minutes later Marine doubled their lead. It came from Michael Fernandes again as he was set clear on the left. He drove into the penalty area and finished with a low drive inside the far post.

On 42 minutes the irrepressible Michael Fernandes was bundled over in the box. He picked himself up and sent the keeper the wrong way for his first half hat-trick. Marine were giving the visiting defenders a difficult time. In the four minutes of added time Dave Sims-Burgess had two good efforts that both slid agonisingly wide of the far post.

The second half saw Tivvy throw caution to the wind and push three up top. However, they struggled to break through the resolute Marine centre back pairing of Liam Angel and Ioan Richards. The hosts came close to getting a fourth on the hour mark when Harry Williams had a shot well saved and Dave Sims-Burgess hit the bar on the follow up. Harry Williams then seemed to be felled. However, the referee, who was well positioned, deemed it a dive and a caution for the home team striker.

Michael Fernandes mazy dribbling skills were giving the visitor’s defenders a gruelling time. A jinking run on 70 minutes saw a well struck effort clear the bar. That was his last significant contribution of the match and with fifteen minutes of normal time remaining he left the field of play to rapturous applause from the Marine faithful.

On 78 minutes a ball was played across the box and Anton Dworzak hammered the ball home for 4-0. Another piece of slick passing culminating in an assured finish. Five minutes later Jake Lee’s strong header saw Tiverton’s keeper save with his feet for what was the last significant action of the match.

For Tiverton Town this will have been a disappointing performance. In the early exchanges they created some good openings and forced Marine’s keeper Luke Purnell into several crucial saves. However, once Marine went two up they struggled to create many meaningful opportunities.

Marine deserve credit for the turn around from their previous match. There was not a player who did not put in a good shift. As stated previously Luke Purnell made some excellent saves in the first thirty minutes of the match. Full backs Sam Turl and Ryan Campbell were a constant threat on the overlap but also did well depriving opponents of crossing opportunities. The two centre backs were colossal with Ioan Richard and Liam Angel winning aerial battles and looking assured in the completion of their defensive duties.

Jamie Edge did an excellent screening job in front of the back four and passed with assurity. Anton Dworzak and Liban Ibrahim were high energy going forward, determined in the tackle, and excellent in their doubling up with their partner full back to limit Tivvy’s crossing opportunities.

Dave Sims-Burgess and Harry Williams gave the Devonian centre backs a torrid old time. Their industry and zeal was pivotal in giving Michael Fernandes the space to weave his magic. His was an exceptional performance that was a joy to observe. The management team also warrant a great deal of credit for their part in the turn around from the previous Saturday’s performance.

The cherry on the cake for Marine - the team’s fourth clean sheet in ten league matches.

Come on Marine!
