MARINE SINK DOLPHINS

Marine produced an exceptional performance to put five past high flying Poole Town.

The home team opened the scoring in the 10th minute when a mistake at the back by Josh Staunton was pounced on by DAVE SIMS-BURGESS. He surged clear of the last defender, who attempted to tug him back and he moved towards goal. As the visiting keeper advanced he calmly dinked the ball into the back of the net. A quality finish that also owed a debt of thanks to an excellent application of the advantage clause by the referee.

Just before half time Poole Town then had a lifeline. An impetuous Marine challenge by Zack Kotwica saw a penalty awarded to the visitors. However, the experienced Toby Holmes’ spot kick was well saved by Luke Purnell diving to his right. This was a key turning point – had the visitors gone into half-time on level terms who knows how things might have turned out?

The first five minutes of the second half saw Poole Town put the Marine defence under pressure. Marine though regained their equilibrium and in the 52nd minute a powerful Jake Lee header from a corner rattled the bar. The follow up was then cleared off the line.

On the hour mark Marine did double their lead. A swift break from the home side saw Liban Ibrahim gallop down the right flank leaving defenders trailing in his wake. His driven cross to the front post was met perfectly by DAVE SIMS-BURGESS who poked home at the near post. The timing of the striker’s run to get ahead of his marker was excellent forward play.

In the 67th minute Marine experienced a rare moment of alarm when a right wing corner hit the top of the cross bar eventually going out of play on the far side of the pitch.

On 69 minutes Marine scored a splendiferous third. Awarded a free kick 25-yards from goal when MICHAEL FERNANDES was stopped in his tracks he got up to hit a perfect free kick into the top corner of the net. It was a goal worthy of the admission money in its own right!

Two minutes later things got still better for Marine. Substitute HARRY WILLIAMS, who had come on for Sim-Burgess in 70 minute, scored two quick goals. The first was a towering header from a Fernandes corner in the 72-minute and then nine minutes he took advantage of hesitancy between a visiting defender and goalkeeper Cameron Plain on the edge of the area. Williams headed the ball over the keeper’s head towards a vacant goal and then watched the ball roll into the net.

Marine produced an outstanding performance that totally belied their league position. Poole Town will undoubtedly perceive this to be a bad day at the office. From a Marine perspective everyone put in a player of the match performance - their defensive play was resolute and courageous; the midfield play industrious and creative; and the strikers ruthless in their finishing. The team deservedly left the field of play to rapturous applause from the home support.

Well done Marine!
