Match Report from Pete Crockett
BATTLING MARINE KNOCKED OUT OF THE FA CUP
Marine were knocked out of the FA Cup by high flying Poole Town. Despite defeat the visitors put up a spirited performance that on a more fortuitous day could have seen them advance to the next round. Marine started the sharper with a dangerous cross shot from Dave Sims Burgess in the 6th minute sliding just past the post.
Then in the 15th minute Harry Williams got on the end of a Liban Ibrahim cross but on the stretch could not get a strong contact. Two minutes later Dave Sims-Burgess netted but any celebration was curtailed by the assistant’s flagging for offside, which the home supporters, who were in line with the attacker said he was marginally on side. Some go for you and some go the other way!
Slowly but surely Poole got more into the game. On 19 minutes the Dolphin’s Jamar Smith neatly dribbled past several Marine players before laying off the ball to Tom Hewlett whose shot was well blocked. Three minutes later the home team’s Jake McCarthy passed to Tom Hewlett who turned neatly and set up Harvey Slade who shot just wide.
In the final third of the first half Poole’s Tom Hewlett had two good chances - on 35 minutes he fired a sharp shot on the turn which Dan Brabham saved well. Two minutes later a swift break from the hosts saw Jake McCarthy play him in and Hewlett’s fierce shot saw the Marine keeper produce another excellent save.
On 42 minutes The Dolphins took the lead with a goal of the season contender. TYRIQUE CLARK received the ball and dribbled across the edge of the box from left to right. He then cut back on his left foot and hit a top-quality finish into the top corner of the net. A high-quality goal where one just has to give credit to the goalscorer.
Marine’s best chance before half time came on 45 minutes with a great ball over the top from Sam Turl but keeper Cam Plain, although had a slight hesitation about advancing just got to the ball just ahead of Marine’s Dave Sims-Burgess on the edge of the box as the striker looked to lob him.
In the first two minutes of the second half Marine broke swiftly but Ryan Campbell blazed his shot over. Poole then saw Tyrique Clarke shoot wide and Antonio Diaz clear the cross bar following a slick build up. In the 57th minute Marine’s Zack Kotwica had a shot blocked and then a similar fate 10 minutes later when Liban Ibrahim forced a great block from the home team’s Harry Thomas.
With Marine pressing for an equaliser Poole secured their passage to the next round with a second goal on 79 minutes. A counterattack down the left flank saw substitute Jack Hoey thread a low cross to TOBY HOLMES who had the easiest of chances to slam the ball into the roof of the net from close range.
Marine showed character and kept going to the end, with Liban Ibrahim having a great chance at the far post but he slammed his effort over the bar and then in the 93rd minute home keeper Cameron Plain pulled off a good save to deny Olly Mehew.
Marine competed toe-to-toe with a top five opponent and should take heart from that. As the opponent’s match report said “Swindon Supermarine are a good side.”. It was not to be Marine’s year for an FA Cup run but the team can take pride in the character and qualities they showed in the two cup ties and we go again on Saturday for our third encounter in a week!
