Match Report from Aleck Everard
A NIGHT TO FORGET
Swindon Supermarine tackled their first away day of the new campaign – but could they do it on a Tuesday night in Basingstoke?
Gaffer Stuart Fleetwood opted for one change from the opening day line-up with Ollie Mehew making a debut in place of Dave Sims-Burgess up top. Sam Turl was making his 100th league appearance for the club.
Luke Purnell was called into early action with a comfortable save but it was Harry Williams who had the first good effort of the match with a looping header which was well saved by Grant in the home goal.
Purnell made a good stop on 10 minutes after a defensive mix-up at the back by Marine. Toby Holland then had a good long range strike well held soon after but the hosts took the lead on 15 minutes.
Paul Hodges scores scores Basingstoke’s first goal
Marine switched off at a throw in and Paul Hodges fired an effort under no pressure into the top corner. Bridgeman nearly made it two as the home side were confident after the goal but Purnell made a good low stop.
Toby Holland picked up a knock and was forced off on 25 minutes to be replaced by Liban Ibrahim. Marine were pushing and Jake Lee had a free header at a corner but aimed it straight at Grant and within a minute it was 2-0 when a free kick was driven across the box before falling at the back post for Dan Warre who drilled it home on 28 minutes.
Grant was proving to be a thorn in Marine’s side with a double stop from Michael Fernandes and then Liban Ibrahim to half Swindon’s comeback charge. Williams nearly got one just before half time beating Grant to the ball but his effort hit the stopper’s shoulder, then the bar before going over.
A clinical first half for Basingstoke with no luck for Marine. The second half started quietly but saw Sims-Burgess replaced a limping Fernandes on 55 minutes but it was effectively game over when following a foul by Nick Peare for which he was booked, a fierce effort was well saved by Purnell only for Dan Warre to react quickest to the rebound and make it 3-0 to score his second a goal on the night.
It was changes galore then from both sides with 20 minutes to go. Alex Hallett and Gabe Reivers made their club debuts on for Nick Pearce and Ollie Mehew. Basingstoke hit the bar late on with a free kick and despite an effort from Sims-Burgess the visitors were out of luck and the points were gone.
Despite looking lively once more in attack the defensive aspects of the game were sorely lacking and Marine will be looking to put that right on Saturday as they visit Hanwell Town in a must win game.
Come on Marine!
