Match Report from Pete Crockett

Hendon win a scrappy match

This was not a game to live long in the memory. The sky was louring and the first half matched the gloom with little goal mouth incident. Indeed, there was barely a shot on target. For Marine Harry Williams poked Sam Turl’s cross goal header over the bar. Whilst the visitors were limited to shots from distance.

The second half was a slightly more entertaining affair. Two minutes into the second half a Jake Andrews free kick from 25 yards was on target but the Hendon keeper got down sharply to his left to push the effort around the post.

In the 63rd minute Liban Ibrahim sent Harry Williams clear, but his shot was blocked. Then on 80 minutes a Sam Turl cross found Henry Spalding in the six-yard box but his effort was parried well by keeper Dylan Berry

Two minutes later Marine were made to pay for that miss when a long distance shot from substitute Shaun Lucien found the corner of the net. A good strike out of context with what had been a decidedly cagey game.

Marine then pressed hard for the equaliser and Sam Turl ran onto a cross from Henry Spalding ball ten yards from goal, but Dylan Berry in the Hendon goal made an excellent point blank save. On 90 minutes Hendon hero Dylan Berry then pulled off a diving save from George Dowling’s twenty-yard thunderbolt.

Adopting a glass half empty versus glass half full approach from a Swindon Supermarine perspective the following thoughts come to mind:

Glass half empty

• Marine’s tempo was, for too much of the match, a little ponderous. This enabled Hendon to organise defensively and thus played to their strengths. • Some will consider on chances created that Marine were unlucky to have lost this match. Others might question whether Marine did sufficient to make life uncomfortable for their opponents. • The paltry return of four points from Marine’s last four home matches feels like a spurned chance to pull clear of the relegation battle.

Glass half full

• Marine had two good chances to score and a few presentable half chances. Marine most certainly shaded it on opportunities created. • Defensively Marine looked solid and were beaten by what was one of two Hendon shots on target. Marine’s enhanced defensive solidity is very much a positive to build upon. • The weekend’s other results at the bottom end of the table were not as bad as they might have been. • This team has the quality to put a run of results together.

A well used chiasmus most aptly sums up what is needed over the next few weeks - “all for one and one for all.” Every player needs to demonstrate one hundred per cent commitment to avoiding relegation. They need to battle for their club, their teammates, their supporters, and their own self pride. Anything less will not be good enough.

Come on Marine!
