Match Report from Pete Crockett

A TORPID AND TORTUOUS SCORELESS DRAW

This really was a disappointing game to watch. Wimborne Town arrived at the Webbswood as the league’s form team and struggled to find any fluency. Marine needed points to break clear of the relegation struggle and managed a paltry one shot on target. The biggest cheer from those members of the crowd who had not succumbed to extreme somnolence was when the final whistle blew.

The visiting Magpies had an early chance with Jez Bedford firing a shot from close range over the bar. Then in the middle of the first half the visitor’s Matt Burrows and Josh Carmichael had shots on target easily gathered by Fiachra Pagel. Meanwhile Marine had their one shot on goal from Lucius Vine that was easily saved by the visitor’s Cameron Plain.

The second half became even more of a slugfest with neither side finding any fluency. In the 51st minute the Magpie’s Sam Jackson fired a volley just over the bar. Meanwhile from a corner Marine’s Nick Peare saw a looping header just clear the cross bar.

The one genuinely memorable moment of the match occurred in the 83rd minute. The visitor’s Toby Holmes got on the end of a long throw and hit a firm volley towards goal. The effort was very well saved by Fiachra Pagel.

From a Marine perspective it was hard to find many positives in our forward play. The Marine strikers were left feeding off scraps and having to chase lost causes. Zack Kotwica put in a strong battling performance in midfield; centre backs Ioan Richards and Nick Peare were resolute defensively; Fiachra Pagel was effective in managing all that was asked of him; and full backs Ryan Campbell and Sam Turl had good games stifling the aerial supply to Magpie’s target man Will Fletcher

This was a match where defences dominated and a point apiece was the outcome!
