OWN GOAL SALVAGES A POINT FOR MARINE

The immediate post match emotions of the two sets of supporters will have been very different. Going into the 90th minute 2-1 down a last-minute equaliser will feel like a point gained for Marine supporters. However, those travelling back to London will feel that two points were dropped.

Marine opened the scoring in the 1st minute. Michael Fernandes fired in a curling effort from 25 yards that hit the foot of the far post. IOAN RICHARDS then latched onto the loose ball to rifle a shot into the back of the net. After some neat interplay Hanwell won a corner and equalised in the 11th minute when Jordan Edwards bundled the ball home from close range.

Six minutes later home keeper Fiachra Pagel made two crucial saves. The first a reflex stop from a Roberto Nditi effort and the second a diving save at the feet of Alfie Pendlebury as the visiting forward looked to latch onto the loose ball from the keeper’s first stop. The visitors were now dominating possession and had further chances – Emmerson Sutton dragged a shot wide, and Rod Orlando-Young mishit his effort when well placed.

On 24 minutes the Marine keeper tipped over another Jordan Edwards effort. However, the visiting striker was not to be deterred and on 30 minutes he curled a sumptuous twenty-five-yard free kick around the wall and inside the far post. A good free kick but, from a home team perspective, was that wall positioned correctly?

After a storming start it would be fair to say Marine’s first half performance was well below par. The passing was too often inaccurate; the speed of interplay was ponderous with little upfield progression; the midfield pressing was yards off where it needed to be; the movement off the ball was sluggish with too many home players failing to make short burst runs to create a passing option for the player on the ball; and the ball spent too much time being passed back to the keeper or centre backs.

Things were little better when Marine went long. A diagonal long ball to turn a defence or to switch play can be effective. However, a straight ball for a straight run will invariably have one outcome – it will come straight back at you.

The second half saw Marine pick up the momentum and Sam Beasant made a couple of impressive saves. The second in the 75th minute from Gabe Reivers being exceptional with the keeper diving to his right to parry a close-range effort wide of the post. A minute later the visiting keeper was called into action again when Michael Fernandes whipped an audacious free kick from the corner of the area into the near post.

In the 90th minute Hanwell gave Marine a reprieve following a communication breakdown. A lofted ball into the box saw keeper Sam Beasant charge to the edge of the area in a forlorn attempt to claim the cross. However, the keeper was left stranded in no mans land as the ball was headed over his head and into his own goal by teammate Harry Seabrook. Marine very nearly snatched it at the end when Anton Dworzak’s effort from the edge of the box was bravely charged down by visiting defenders.

Hanwell Town will feel that this match was a victory that slipped out of their grasp. Several of their players caught the eye. Jordan Edwards was a constant threat up front; Sam Beasant made some crucial saves; Emmerson Sutton was a live wire on the flank; and in the first half Callum Woodcock very much bossed the midfield engine room. A word of credit to referee Jake Wolley and his assistants. They allowed the game to flow and got all the big decisions right.

From a Marine perspective the second half performance was much better than the first. The introduction of Liban Ibrahim and Anton Dworzak added some much-needed zest to the midfield. Additionally, centre back Liam Angel returning to the team put in an impressive performance alongside Ioan Richards. Indeed, the back four and keeper did well to stem wave upon wave of first half attacks as the visitors took control of the midfield.

The match also had some absorbing individual battles. The Geordies pacey QPR loanee Emmerson Sutton really tested Ryan Campbell’s pace but all credit to the Marine man as he won most of the tussles. From a Marine perspective a source of frustration is that for whatever reason proven goal scorers Harry Williams and Dave Sims-Burgess are too infrequently receiving the ball in areas where we know they can inflict damage upon opposing teams. If Marine can solve that conundrum then there is every reason to hope the wins will soon return.
