Match Report from Pete Crockett
Marine lose at the league leaders
Having won the reverse fixture back in November but there was never a chance of a repeat once they had opened the scoring and Chesham went on to complete the win with some possession football and one memorable goal in the final minutes.
Marine had a couple of early long-range shots that were off target but the home side had the effort on goal when Ogo Obi’s shot forced an excellent save from keeper Fiachra Pagel.

Chesham were in control of the game they should have had taken the lead on twenty-six minutes. After a Chesham corner was cleared Roddy Collins crossed the ball back in where Eoin Casey’s header hit the bar and dropped down to Steve Brown who forced the ball over the line but referee Charlie Bullock saw a handball offence and disallowed the goal.

It wasn’t long after the disallowed goal that centre forward Ogo Obi dispossessed Marine defender Matt Bower and crossed to the far post. The ball fell to Jordan Edwards who chested the ball past Mat Liddiard and placed the ball into the far corner of the net from just inside the penalty box.

Minutes later an error from the Marine defence allowed Bradley Clayton to go through on goal and with only keeper Fiachra Pagel to beat, he fluffed his lines and allowed Pagel read which way he was going and smother his shot.
Marine had a few attacks early in the second half but the home side were soon back on top. Pagel pulled off another good save as he tipped a Jordan Edwards shot round the post and then smothered a Ryan Upward effort.

Chesham skipped Steve Brown then crossed into the area after a corner was cleared and Pagel parried away a Callum Adebiyi effort from close range. On the hour mark Chesham doubled their lead when Bradley Clayton crossed from the right, and with two Marine defenders got in each other’s way Ogo Obi scored Chesham’s second goal as he pounced on the loose ball.

Chesham midfielder T’Sharne Gallimore’s shot then beat Pagel but came back off a post before Ogo Obi curled a shot wide. Shortly afterwards on 74 minutes Marine’s Levi Irving had a shot that thumped against the chest of home keeper Zaki Oualah who was first to the ball to pick up the rebound.

On 76 minutes Marine missed a great chance to get on the scoresheet when substitute Henry Spalding was unmarked as he met a cross in front of goal but headed over with just Zaki Oualah to beat.

Marine were starting to press for the first time in the match, but on 82 minutes Callum Adebiyi broke away following a corner and set up Jordan Edwards who ran through and slotted past Pagel to make it 3-0.

Chesham wrapped up the game with most likely their goal of the season on 89 minutes. Lewis Rolfe headed a Bradley Clayton free kick back across goal and with Ryan Upward with his back to goal scored with a spectacular overhead kick.

Post match several thoughts come to mind. The first is that losing to a top of the table side is not the result that will ultimately decide Marine’s destiny. Indeed, there will be very few sides who will match the three points Marine gained against them at the Webbswood.
The second is that credit is due to Fiachra Pagel who had an excellent game between the sticks. He has proved an impressive replacement for the departed Conor Brann.
Thirdly, Marine are in a relegation battle and need to turn results around soon. The last five matches, with four away games and four games against promotion chasers, were always going to be tough.
It is now time that there is a need for points to be accrued. With twelve league games remaining safety can be gained but this will require everyone in a Marine shirt to be giving their all, displaying tenacity and grit, and producing the high-quality football Marine supporters know they can play.
Come on Marine!
