MARINE JUST FALL SHORT OF WINNING THEIR FIRST LEAGUE GAME

Swindon Supermarine players will have left the pitch at the final whistle wondering how they did not gain their first league win of the season. The reality is the result was determined by a combination of their own failure to convert chances and a brilliant display of goal keeping by the visitor’s Sam Beasant.

In the first half Marine produced numerous goal scoring opportunities. Marine went close to opening the scoring in the 4th minute when some slick passing sent Brad Gray clear, but his shot slid wide of the post.

The initial exchanges were relatively even and some three minutes later the visitor’s Jack Hutchinson forced Conor Brann into a sharp save. However, after this Marine were very much in the ascendancy. Zack Kotwica minutes later forced the first of several excellent saves from Beasant in the visitor’s goal.

Halfway through the first half Beasant produced two more fine saves from efforts from Zack Kotwica and Levi Irving. A pattern was emerging of Marine creating chances but being thwarted by the opposing keeper.

The game’s two goals came in a five-minute spell just before half time. Both side’s goal had an element of good fortune. In the 40th minute Hutchinson broke clear on the right and fizzed an excellent cross into the six-yard box. Marine’s Mat Liddiard had to attempt to intercept with a tap in finish imminent at the back post. The defender’s despairing effort only succeeded in deflecting the ball into his own goal.

Marine’s equaliser also had a degree of good fortune. On the stroke of half time a shot from distance looped into the path of Joe Tumelty whose volleyed effort from fifteen yards beat the keeper.

Just prior to the equaliser the midfielder had forced yet another impressive save from Beasant when Brad Gray played a ball across the visitor’s penalty area – Joe Tumelty’s shot was well struck but at a good height for the keeper to parry around the post.

In the second half Marine continued to create openings. In the 47th minute a Levi Irving effort was parried and the follow up shot was deflected over the bar.

However, Hanwell Town were still a threat on the counterattack and a few minutes later good work by Sam Oguntayo released Elliot Benyon but his shot was blocked and looped into the hands of Conor Brann in the Marine goal.

Still Marine kept creating chances – an Ioan Richards header went just wide from a corner; Mat Liddiard saw an effort thwarted by good defending; a Henry Spalding effort heading for the inside of the far post saw Beasant produce a high-quality fingertip save; Joe Tumelty mistimed a volley over the bar; and a goal mouth scramble saw the visitors defend resolutely to prevent what seemed a certain goal. It was just not going to be Marine’s day!

That said things could have been even worse for Marine when in the 83rd minute Hanwell’s Hutchinson blasted a clear-cut chance from inside the box over the bar following an excellent cut back from Jacob Bancroft. That would have been the cruellest of sucker punches.

From a Marine perspective there were a number of impressive performances. Ioan Richards and Mat Liddiard were solid in the centre of defence; Jake Andrews and Joe Tumelty put in exceptionally impressive performances in central midfield; Henry Spalding looked back to his best form; and both Levi Irving and Brad constantly troubled the visiting defence – particularly in the first half.

The result extends Marine’s unbeaten run to four matches and offers hope that results will turn. There was not a Marine player who had a bad game. Hanwell will return to London thankful that their keeper had such an outstanding game between the sticks.
