Match Report from Pete Crockett

Profligacy and penalty denials cost Marine

Marine will come away feeling disappointed not to have secured three vital points. For 75 minutes they were pretty much in control of this match. They ultimately though dropped two points as a result of their own profligacy; some curious refereeing; some good goalkeeping by the host’s keeper; and a storming fight back in the final fifteen minutes by Winchester City.

The profligacy in the match was costly. Marine missed some presentable chances that, quite frankly, should have been buried. At this level if you are wasteful when the chances arise it will all too often come back to bite you.

Marine have gone thirty-three matches without a penalty. In the second half it would be fair to say the travelling support were left bamboozled, and not a little angered, at not receiving at least one in this match.

In the first incident Levi Irving entered the penalty area, the ball was in front of him, the defender behind. The defender caught his legs. Levi fell. The referee declined the award. These things happen - it is about angles and the break was quick meaning the referee was reaching a decision from a far from advantageous viewing angle.

The denial of the second potential penalty was less easy to comprehend. Dave Sims-Burgess was in the area. He was about to shoot on goal from ten yards. He was clearly bought down from behind by an already cautioned defender. Everyone waited for the referee to point to the spot.

The Marine striker had nothing to gain by falling – the goal was open. It surely had to be Marine’s first penalty in 33 games. The sense of genuine disbelief amongst the Marine support and players at the referee’s non-award was palpable.

Marine played some good football in the first half with Luke Carney in the Winchester City goal making three good saves. These included when Henry Spalding was played in on a one-on-one; a sharp save from a Dave Sims-Burgess shot; and an airborne save from a diving header from the same player.

It was thus ironical that the host’s keeper was culpable for Marine’s opening goal. A dipping low cross shot from Ryan Campbell eluded his grasp and entered the goal just inside the far post.

Marine doubled their lead in the 65th minute. Dave Sims-Burgess was played in on goal. He beat a defender and gave the keeper the eyes. The keeper anticipated a far post effort and the Marine striker passed the ball nonchalantly inside the near upright.

A chance to secure a third goal was spurned when Henry Spalding’s effort from close range was parried by the keeper. Marine also had a Dave Sims-Burgess goal rightly disallowed for offside.

In the 77th minute the hosts pulled one back through Stuart Mott after a spell of sustained pressure. The equaliser in the 88th minute was tapped home by Ik Hill following a goal mouth scramble.

In injury time Winchester looked the more likely to secure a winner with an effort at the end going just wide of the post.

This was two points dropped by Marine. With other teams at the bottom winning Marine are perilously a mere one place above the relegation zone having played more games than their rivals and with a considerably worse goal difference. Time to dig deep and fight hard.

Come on Marine!
