UNBEATEN RUN COMES TO AN END
Swindon Supermarine took on Hayes & Yeading United in the league on Saturday afternoon looking to extend their unbeaten run to seven matches. Manager Lee Spalding made four changes to the line up from the midweek County Cup match with Jamie Edge, Harry Williams, George Dowling and Tyrone Duffus back in the team. James Harding, having returned from a back injury was on the bench but Lewis Hall and Tom Sharpe still remained out with injuries.

After some early to and froing it was Marine who struck first and who else but top scorer HARRY WILLIAMS netted. Zack Kotwica won the ball off the full back and played in Williams who made no mistake with a calm finish into the bottom corner of the net past Dan Wilks on eleven minutes. Shortly afterwards Ryan Campbell came so close to making it two, but his effort was cleared by Hayes defender. Marine were looking confident after their goal and Sam Turl broke through on goal just before the half hour but was harshly adjudged to have fouled his marker.

It wasn’t until 32 minutes that Marine goalkeeper Liam Armstrong was called into action with a brave take at the feet of the impressive Oluwasanmi Odelusi. Hayes were starting to put some more pressure on at the end of the first half, but Marine were defending well as the half drew to a close. Indeed, Marine started the second period on top and when Williams broke through again, he appeared to be clipped just as he was about to shoot but incredibly the referee waved away the appeal. Then just as it looked like a second was coming the visitors hit Marine with a sucker punch on their first attack in the second half.

From a corner a shot from defender Charlie Wassmer was stopped on the line by Will Tunnicliff but rebounded back to fellow defender JERRY WILTSHIRE who slotted the ball home through a packed goalmouth on 56 minutes. Marine’s response was spirited, and after Joe Tumelty was brought down on the edge of the box only for George Dowling to hit the free kick straight at the wall and from the rebound Hayes took the lead with only their second effort on target. Full back COLE BROWN played in a one-two with Moses Emmanuel before finishing from an acute angle to shell shock the Marine backline.

Lee Spalding decided to chase the game and made a triple substitution bringing on Brad Hooper, Conor McDonagh and Henry Spalding for Zack Kotwica, George Dowling and Joe Tumelty but before they could readjust to the extra man up top Hayes hit a third goal on 64 minutes. A quick break saw REECE COLE score from an acute angle for a 3-1 lead.

The game then went into a quieter period before a key moment with nine minutes left when Moses Emmanuel broke into the left side of the box on the left and went down theatrically but it didn’t stop the referee pointing to the spot. It looked a soft penalty to give, especially after waiving away the penalty appeal on Williams earlier in the game, but EMMANUEL made no mistake from the spot kick sending home keeper Liam Armstrong the wrong way.

It was another spirited response from Marine though who wouldn’t give it up easily and with five minutes left made it 4-3 after a corner and a goalmouth scramble the ball fell to Marien defender WILL TUNNICLIFF who slid the ball in from close range for his first goal for the club. Marine continued to chase a leveller with Conor McDonagh having a shot held but pushing a bit too hard left Marine exposed at the back and REECE COLE capitalised with a low shot from the right beating Armstrong for a fifth goal and sealing the points in injury time. A disappointing second half for Marine but the game turned on some big decisions that didn’t go in our favour against a very good attacking outfit.
