Match Report from Pete Crockett
GOSPORT BOROUGH WIN FOUR IN A ROW
Gosport Borough gained their fourth league win of the season in a spartan affair. The first effort of any merit occurred in the 37th minute. Gosport’s Harry Medway struck a tremendous 25-yard shot against the underside of the crossbar and the ball ricocheted downwards to nestle in the back of the net.
The visitors started the second-half the sharper and in the 47th minute a cross from Harry Kavanagh saw a Dan Wooden header graze the bar. Five minutes later Supermarine nearly grabbed an equaliser when Henry Spalding fired a shot at goal following a poor keeper clearance. The shot was goal bound but the keeper scrambled back to atone for his error.
In the 79th minute Harry Medway doubled the visitors lead with a tap in at the back post after a surging run into the box from substitute Gerson Ramos.
Marine had a couple of late efforts with a Mat Liddiard effort just clearing the bar and some good passing creating an opening for Zack Kotwica who had timed his run to perfection, but his shot was gathered by the keeper.
Gosport’s win was built upon the foundations of a solid defensive display. Marine will take some comfort from some good midfield possession but will be disappointed not to have created more goal scoring opportunities.
Defensively Marine were also much more effective at stopping crosses coming into danger areas. Levi Irving again worked hard up-front and was, arguably, not given as much protection from pushes and pulls as is the norm.
The Marine points return from our first four matches is undeniably disappointing. However, we are currently a team in transition and the players and management need continued support and encouragement as this process embeds.
Come on Marine!
