Match Report from Pete Crockett
MARINE FAIL TO SINK BOATMEN
On a chilly yet sunny autumnal day the spectators at the Webbswood were witness to a highly entertaining goalless draw. This was a game where both sides strived to play open passing football on an energy sapping surface.
Sholing had the greater possession in the early exchanges. However, neither side managed to cause any major alarms for their opponents. The best opening Sholing created in the early skirmishes saw a Brad Targett effort from the edge of the box comfortably held by Conor Brann in the Marine goal. Similarly, the visiting keeper Ryan Gosney was relatively untroubled when saving a header from Levi Irving. Marine’s Joe Tumelty also saw a well struck effort from 25 yards clear the bar.
The first effort on goal that will have caused genuine unease to either keeper came in the 22nd minute when Marine’s Sam Turl hit a shot from the edge of the box that flashed just past the post.
Both sets of defences were working tremendously hard to limit their opponents’ openings with Sholing defenders Dan Miller and Jake Flannigan making tremendous blocks when the visitors were under pressure. The latter of these blocks was particularly impressive as Ryan Campbell’s strike from just outside the six-yard box looked goal bound. The visitors were also creating openings and Jake Cope fired an on-target effort that was well gathered by a perfectly positioned Conor Brann.
In the 38th minute Marine’s Zack Kotwica engineered himself a yard of space just inside the box, but his shot was pushed wide by the diving keeper. Marine also had a Sam Turl shot charged down in the 41st minute with the home team players appealing in vain for a handling offence.
Just before half-time Sholing’s Dan Mason received the ball in a central position just inside the Marine penalty area. With his back to goal he pivoted and fired a shot on the turn that went wide of the far post.
The first fifteen minutes of the second half saw Sholing have the greater possession. In this spell “the boatmen’s” Keane Anderson struck a shot just wide of the post and, just minutes later, a shot from outside the box by the same player was safely held by Marine’s keeper.
As is often the way the pendulum then swung back the other way. Substitute Brad Gray, with quite possibly his first touch, forced a sharp save from Ryan Gosney. This was then followed by a sweeping Marine move on 76 minutes when Ryan Campbell’s inch perfect chipped pass set Liban Ibrahim clear on the left. He fizzed in a probing low cross that saw Dave Burgess-Sims go close for Marine.
Between these two efforts Sholing’s Brad Targett drove into the box from the left flank. He found Dan Mason whose effort was thwarted by a courageous body on the line block by Marine’s Ryan Campbell.
In stoppage time both sides had a chance to break the deadlock. Jake Adams surged into Marine’s penalty area, but his effort was well saved by Conor Brann. Then, with what was virtually the last kick of the match, Henry Spalding’s effort for Marine was well blocked by keeper Gosney’s feet.
At the final whistle Marine could justifiably feel they created the clearer goal scoring opportunities and did enough to earn the win. However, Sholing played some excellent football themselves and would understandably have felt hard done by to leave the Webbswood without at least a point. Indeed, it was hard to argue against the end of match comments of both managers that a draw was a fair outcome.
This was an engrossing and entertaining encounter between two good footballing sides.
