DEADLOCK AT THE WEBBSWOOD AS LEAGUE LEADERS COME TO TOWN
Swindon Supermarine took on Southern League leaders Weston-super-Mare at the Webbswood Stadium on Saturday afternoon looking to keep a winning run going after two league wins in two league matches. Manager Lee Spalding opted for one change to the starting line up from that which played the last league game. Leon Morrison coming in for the injured Tom Sharpe. Tyrone Duffus (fractured cheekbone), George Dowling (hamstring), and Lewis Hall (knee) were all ruled out as well.

On a soft playing surface it was a quiet start to the game with the first effort from Ellis Watts was well saved by Josh Gould on thirteen minutes before Brad Hooper blasted over on sixteen minutes. Weston’s Murray went into the book for hauling down Will Tunnicliff on a good run up the wing which led to a Marine corner. This led to the best chance of the half as the corner was cleared by the Seagulls defence but came to winger Ryan Campbell whose fierce drive was superbly batted away by Luke Purnell in the visiting goal.

Marine’s Jamie Edge was next into the book for a foul closely followed by Will Tunnicliff. The booking count went to 2-2 after defender Jason Pope went through the back of Harry Williams. The game was competitive rather than dirty despite this flurry of cards with both sides trying to play the game the right way instead of hoofing it long. At half time it was all square and Marine had more than held their own against the league top scorers.

The second period followed roughly the same pattern as the first but with Weston having the bulk of the pressure only to see the home defence holding firm under the stewardship of captain Mat Liddiard with strong assistance from Sam Turl, Leon Morrison and Will Tunnicliff, however Marine always looked sharp on the break with Harry Williams a threat in a lone striker role up front.

Leon Morrison headed over from a corner early into the second half before Ryan Campbell was hauled down again by Jay Murray. Despite a lengthy talking to from the official he survived a second yellow. On the hour Weston’s Noah Coppin went close with a good run and a shot fired into the side netting for Weston and was then replaced by Marlon Jackson.

Leon Morrison who had been putting in a decent shift pulled up with twenty minutes to go and this saw Zack Kotwica enter the fray with Jamie Edge dropping back into the centre of defence alongside skipper Mat Liddiard. Henry Spalding was next into the referee’s book next for pulling back Murray before Weston’s new signing Ollie Mehew came off the bench for his debut, replacing the lively Ellis Watts who had an excellent game.

With time running out and the visitors pushing hard, a great break from Marine saw Henry Spalding take the ball down the wing and an excellent cross fell to Harry Williams whose superb swivel past Sam Avery allowed him to get in a shot that looked destined for the top corner of the goal until Luke Purnell flew through the air to push the shot wide. A world class and match saving save.

Then immediately afterwards at the other end of the pitch Marine keeper Josh Gould earnt his salt a minute later as tipped Scott Laird’s shot onto the post, which was equally as important to keep the deadlock. Despite an extra five minutes no breakthrough was achieved and in fairness three points for either side would have been unjust. A decent point at home against the league leaders and champions elect. Lots of positives for Marine. Next up is a trip to Poole Town on Tuesday night, as the game start to come thick and fast with Beaconsfield Town away on the Saturday to follow.
