Marine 1 Dorchester Town 2
Pitching In Southern League Premier South | Saturday 9th December 2023
Match Report from Pete Crockett
One goal for sorrow - two goals for joy
On a heavy pitch Dorchester Town brought Marine’s five match unbeaten run to an end. The Magpies deserved their victory defending resolutely, taking their chances, and stifling Marine’s highly effective passing game of recent weeks.
The away team took the lead in the 19th minute when a cross found the head of Olaf Koszela who nodded back across goal for Will Fletcher to knock the ball home from close range. Marine were struggling to create openings but in the 32nd minute Dave Sims-Burgess played in Henry Spalding who finished with panache from fifteen yards.
The deciding goal came just before the half time whistle when a Corby Moore corner was headed across goal by Will Spetch and with Marine’s Sam Turl heading the ball off the line the ball hit Will Fletcher on the leg and richoched over the line.
In the second half Marine had plenty of possession but rarely threatened on goal with their only real effort of note coming five minutes from the end when Henry Spalding hit a well struck half volley just wide of the post.
Indeed, in the second half it was the Magpies who had the better chances with a good strike from Jordan Thomas going just wide and Marine’s Conor Brann having to make a couple of sharp saves. They also had a shout for a penalty turned down.
The visitors very much deserved their victory. They defended resolutely, took their chances well, and had more efforts on goal. Marine meanwhile barely fired a shot on target and, in comparison to recent form, were decidedly off colour.
Some might be tempted to say the defeat stemmed from Marine’s commitment to build from the back. However, this footballing philosophy had seen Marine secure a five-match unbeaten run prior to this defeat. So, if it was not that then why were things awry?
In reality probably a combination of factors – a heavy pitch not conducive to Marine’s passing game; a general lack of intensity; an inclination to too often pass backwards - conceivably down to a lack of movement in more advanced positions; a paucity of shots on target; and the proverbial “bad day at the office” syndrome with too many players dropping below the impressive levels of recent matches.
The challenge now is to learn the lessons from this defeat and to plan for an enhanced performance next Saturday at Gosport Borough. One defeat does not erase the significant improvements of recent weeks. It does though provide a jolt that drop below those standards and defeat against any opponent in this league is the likely outcome.
Come on Marine!
