Match Report from Pete Crockett
Injury time blow for Marine
The game started with lots of endeavour but few chances on target. The second half was a more eventful affair with four goals and a sending off,
Marine took the lead in the 50th minute when Jake Andrews hit a belter from 25-yards that beat Zak Baker, the Tiverton keeper, who was rooted to the floor and could only watch the ball enter the back of the goal.
Then in the 56th minute Henry Spalding beat his man on the flank. He played the ball to Liban Ibrahim who slotted the ball home from fifteen yards to score his first goal for Marine.
In the 76th minute Marine’s Henry Spalding was dismissed for a second yellow. A flag had gone up for offside and the referee blew his whistle, and a second later the Marine man put the ball in the net. Spectators waited for the restart when but to the surprise of many, the referee brandished a second yellow and a red card for a second offence having been booked earlier for a foul.
The visitors then benefitted from an in-direct free kick in the penalty area awarded for Fiachra Pagel in the Marine goal retaining the ball in his hands for too long. The free kick was charged down and cleared.
Then the sucker punch. In the 92nd minute Dylan Jones netted as Tiverton broke away from a Marine corner and out numbered our defenders. A minute later a long-range effort from Joe Parker cruelly deflected past the Marine keeper with Marine’s Zack Kotwica getting the final touch and gifting Tiverton a late equaliser.
There is no way of sugar coating this one. This felt like two points thrown away. This is a good Marine side but too often in recent weeks the naivety in seeing out games has cost points – Winchester City, Hungerford Town, and now this one. Marine really should have had at least five more points from these games.
Glass half empty - there is work to do on the game management of those crucial final minutes. The other concern has to be the number of goals Marine are conceding. The team currently has the worst defensive record in the division.
Glass half full – the team has plenty of goals in their locker. Also, in mid-October most Marine supporters would be delighted to still have their fate in their own hands at the business end of the season.
