TOPSY TURVEY SEVEN GOAL ENCOUNTER ENDS UP WITH MARINE ON TOP
Swindon Supermarine resumed the season with their first match for three weeks due to the weather by taking on a tough trip to play off chasing Dorchester Town. Manager Lee Spalding opted for an unchanged team to that which saw off Salisbury last time out with Tyrone Duffus returning to the bench after injury and George Dowling missing out with a hamstring injury.

An early effort from Keith Emmerson saw keeper Josh Gould extended early on to push the effort wide but it was Marine who settled the best on the artificial turf. Joe Tumelty earned a free kick but his effort was high wide and not so handsome. Will Tunnicliff got on the end of a corner on seven minutes but put the header just wide. A minute later it should have been 1-0 Marine when Henry Spalding laid it on a plate for top scorer Harry Williams but he sliced the effort wide of goal.

With fourteen minutes on the clock there was a major turning point in the game as Dorchester forward Harvey Bradbury saw red after a coming together with Sam Turl resulting in the forward man flicking out a boot on the Marine full back leaving the referee with no choice but to dismiss him. With the home crowd now baying for a card with every tackle Brad Hooper soon saw himself yellow carded for a foul quickly followed by keeper Josh Gould also going into the referee’s notebook, after he came out of the box and brought down the lively Shaquille Gwengwe in the corner but with covering defenders and the ball moving away from goal it was only ever going to be a yellow for the Marine stopper.

But relief was short lived as from the free kick Neale floated it over to KEITH EMMERSON who whacked home emphatically to give the ten-man Dorchester a shock lead with twenty-three minutes gone. Emmerson was in the thick of the action and after another foul on Sam Turl as he appeared to stamp on the Marine full back with Joe Tumelty reacting by pushing the big defender over. Both men received yellow but Emmerson can consider himself lucky not to have seen red too.

Despite numerical advantage Marine struggled to get going with the nearest chance in the first half being a deflected header from Brad Hooper going wide. A few tactical tweaks from manager Lee Spalding saw Marine take on a more attacking gait in the second period but Gwengwe continued to cause issues with his pace up top and Jamie Edge became the latest to see yellow after bringing the winger down as the forward broke away.

But finally Marine started to put some good attacks together and six minutes in the second period they levelled the scores. A cross to the back post saw Ryan Campbell rise well to head it back to Joe Tumelty who nudged it on to HARRY WILLIAMS. A quick swivel and shot made it 27 goals for the season for the in form striker.

With the Magpies starting to flounder Conor McDonagh boosted the front line coming on for Brad Hooper as Lee Spalding went all out for the win. And it made an instant impact as he almost gave Marine the lead with his first touch. A good shot was well saved by home keeper Ryan Hall. Marine didn’t have to wait long though to get in front. Just a minute later a cross was cleared out to Jamie Edge just outside the box and his effort at goal took a flick in front of the goal from HARRY WILLIAMS and ended up in the net for a 2-1 lead!

But the hosts weren’t giving up and responded in kind four minutes later. First Gould did well to block a shot before the next attack saw SHAQUILLE GWENGWE break through a pedestrian back line and as Gould slipped coming off his line the winger got to the ball to flick it into the top corner of the net to make it 2-2 with still thirty minutes to play. Dorchester’s Jordan Foot replaced Alfie Stanley for the hosts first change a minute later and on 62 minutes it was Marine’s turn to take the initiative once more.

After an excellent move that saw the ball come down the left wing before it was moved in an interchange of passes across to the right wing to find the unmarked HENRY SPALDING just inside the box and he finished with a shot into the goal via the near post for his fifth goal of the season and a second in two games. A long range effort from Will Tunnicliff was then superbly turned away by keeper Hall as Marine looked to seal the points. Harry Williams broke clear on seventy-three minutes and should have made it safe with just Hall to beat from twelve-yards but once again he made a top save to deny him.

Zack Kotwica replaced Spalding with fifteen minutes to go whilst Dorchester brought on Alex Moyse and Louie Slough for Matt Neale and Jordan Ngalo and two of the substitutes met when Slough was booked for hacking down Kotwica and on eighty-five minutes it appeared that the game was over as CONOR MCDONAGH found space just inside the box and his shot looped off a defender and he made it 4-2 to Marine with seven goal for the season now for Conor.

But Dorchester never gave up as they piled men forward. James Harding replaced Williams with two minutes left and with ninety on the clock Marine keeper Josh Gould was adjudged to have brought down Shaquille Gwengwe for a penalty kick. It looked very harsh and the keeper was happy to not see yellow again and then even more happier when the penalty was thumped against the crossbar and rebounded just outside the penalty box.

The hosts continued pushing forward and went all out piling their defenders up top and KIERAN DOUGLAS made it a grandstand finish after netting from what can only be described as a comical incident. As Marine keeper was about to kick the ball out of his hands Gwengwe hassled the keeper and his mishit clearance hit the back of Tom Sharpe, who wasn’t facing the ball along with three other defenders. As the ball bounced off Sharpe some 25-yards from goal it fell into the path of Douglas to slid the ball home into the bottom corner of the net for a 3-4 scoreline.

With five minutes of injury time played and time and running out a Dorchester corner saw the ball come across the six-yard line and defender Kieran Douglas had the simplest of tap ins for the leveller but somehow he smashed his shot way over the crossbar and the game was won by Marine! It had been a simply mad second half, probably down to the lack of games for both sides in the last month, and also down to a lively atmosphere and never say die attitude of the home team. It had been without doubt a simply crazy 90 minutes of football that had it all. I am sure anyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon regardless of the result.
Fans player of the match went to Ryan Campbell, who was immense once more.
