SUPERMARINE EXIT CUP THE HARD WAY

Swindon Supermarine were in Wiltshire Premier Shield action on Tuesday night with an away trip to Southern League Division One side Westbury United. With a place in the semi final at stake manager Lee Spalding shuffled the pack from Saturday’s win at Dorchester bringing in Louis Morrison, Tyrone Duffus, Zack Kotwica, James Harding and Conor McDonagh. Sam Turl took the captains armband with normal skipper Mat Liddiard on the bench.

Zack Kotwica had the first chance of the game flicking the ball over the bar after breaking through but from the next attack the hosts took a shock lead. Josh Gould pawed away a decent strike but the ball was recycled and played into the back post where JOE STRADLING was there to half volley it home.

Supermarine responded instantly and after James Harding’ shot was deflected up into the air WILL TUNNICLIFF was there to bravely head home only to get a bang on the nose from the keeper as he netted. Sadly this meant an early departure for the big full back with Ryan Campbell forced into deputising for the remainder of the game.

After this hectic start the game settled down with the next big chance falling to Westbury’s Sam Jordan who flicked an effort wide of the Marine goal just after the half hour. Tom Sharpe then pulled up after a late challenge and was replaced by Mat Liddiard in midfield. Tyrone Duffus did well on his return from injury to repel a further home attack before the last chance of the half fell to Marine’s James Harding who produced a top save from Jon Hill to push over.

With all to play for in the second period it was very tentative from both teams but Marine looked the more likely with Harding again having a chance, this time with his head over the bar. In a bid to push up the pressure manager Lee Spalding opted to bring on a more attacking option with Henry Spalding coming in for Joe Tumelty with 25 minutes left. He came very close soon after only to see his effort cleared away off the line. Marine were now piling on the pressure but from probably their first attack of the half the game turned on a very strange decision.

A long ball out from the back was chased into the box by Flippance only for the Westbury man to lose his footing and a goal kick signalled. However the assistant had seen something and the referee went over to talk and after a few minutes signalled for a penalty kick. It was certainly one of the softest I had ever seen. Westbury’s STEPHEN HULBERT stepped up to blast the ball down the middle and against the run of play give the hosts led.

Marine pushed on to try and level but with Westbury doing all they could to hang on it went deep into injury time before the last real chance of the game. With 92 minutes on the clock a late corner was met by Tyrone Duffus but he was clattered into from behind by a Westbury defender as he headed the ball. For some reason the referee turned a ‘blind eye’ as he signalled a goal kick? The had to wait for Duffus to receive treatment before ‘gingerly’ departing the pitch with what appeared to be a serious injury to his head. This later turned out to be true as he suffered a fractured eye socket and a double facture of his cheekbone, but the referee gave a GOALKICK! Sometimes you wonder what the referee could have not seen as the clumsy challenge was seen by most people in the ground, but not the one that mattered! Spalding had the last effort deep into injury time but the effort was cleared again from the line.

The hosts held on for what for them was a well fought victory although Marine will feel aggrieved at how it came about and their reign as Wiltshire Premier Shield holders comes to an end. A tough night with some injury knocks but Marine will hope to dust themselves down and go again against league leaders Weston-super-Mare on Saturday.

Fans player of the match went to Leon Morrison.
